A rare, finely made propelling pencil by famed British silversmith Sampson Mordan, co-inventor of the first patented mechanical pencil. The piece has been intricately engraved to the entire length of the body and has been inscribed "Oliver Weston, Brighton". To the top is a gilt crown which can be unscrewed, housing space for the pencil leads. The clear London hallmarks date the item to 1848. An excellent antique collectible in great condition.
