A touching memorial brooch from the 1840's, the front featuring a black onyx plaque adorned with a pearl and diamond set flower, with a shaped gold border, the back with a glass locket compartment. There is hand-engraving which reads "In memory of Margt (Margeret) Jones Obit Sept 7th 1847 at 78".
Mourning jewellery was popular during Georgian and Victorian times, with pieces often containing sentimental mesages, portraits or locks of hair.
Dated 1847.
Unmarked, tested as 15 carat gold.
The brooch measures approximately 44.3mm (L) x 38.9mm (W).
